1999年,飯塚隆和一小部分 Sonic Team 成员前往旧金山建立 Sonic Team USA,以获取西方市场的反馈。在美国,他的团队参与了《索尼克大冒险》的国际发布工作。之后,他的团队开始开发自己的游戏,他担任《索尼克大冒险2》、《索尼克英雄》、《刺猬夏特》和《NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams》的导演和首席设计师。为了进一步拓宽索尼克在西方市场的吸引力,飯塚授权西方开发商 Backbone Entertainment 开发索尼克系列游戏的机会(《索尼克竞争者》和《索尼克竞争者2》),并由他的团队监督开发,登陆 PlayStation Portable 掌机平台。

2008年,Sega Studio USA 的一部分被吸收回日本 Sonic Team 。飯塚成为了 Sonic Team 的负责人,同时也成为 Sonic Team 游戏的新制作人。
在《索尼克未知边境》取得成功后,飯塚被晋升为执行官,并获得了未来与索尼克相关项目的“Sonic Creative Officer”的头衔,于2023年4月1日就任。[1]
